Mr. Matthes has been teaching at Fredericksburg High School since 2003.  He has taught chemistry, physics, and currently teaches engineering. Having graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) with a B.S. in Marine Engineering, he sailed as a third assistant engineer on commercial merchant ships.  Deciding not to follow the design engineering path thereafter, he moved up his plans to teach later in life and followed his true passion: changing lives through project and application based education.

Mr. Matthes will now serve as the FHS Lady Billies varsity soccer coach.  He most recently coached U11 boys for the Hill Country United club team.  In addition to coaching Mr. Matthes referees all youth ages of soccer and played all the way through graduation at The Academy.  You may still see him out on the field or playing at the tennis courts.
