  • What is the National Honor Society?

    The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization founded in 1921, “to create enthusiasm for scholarships, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in our nation’s secondary schools.” Today, NHS is considered the nation’s premier organization in recognizing outstanding students who demonstrate excellence in these areas and is one of the highest honors a high school student can achieve. Additionally, from its inception, this organization has promoted “high school academic standards, […] the continuation of democracy, and […] the betterment of the individual and the school.”

    How can I become a member?
     

    NHS Membership is available to any junior who meets the criteria for selection. This includes demonstrating excellence in four (4) areas: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.  At Fredericksburg High School, students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.75 or better to be considered for selection. A selection committee of faculty members determines whether or not each student meets the other three criteria of character, leadership, and service. Students who are interested and are unsure if they meet the criteria are welcome to email Mrs. Sydney Scheidemantel at sydneys@fisd.org 

    Students selected for the National Honor Society will be notified in October when an induction ceremony will be held.
