Dr. Joe Rodriguez was named Superintendent of Schools for Fredericksburg Independent School District in 2021, a 4A Texas school district serving more than 3,000 students within its 742 square miles.
Prior to joining Fredericksburg ISD, Rodriguez served as the Chief of Schools in Fort Bend ISD, which is the state’s eighth-largest school district, serving more than 78,000 students at 81 campuses. During his tenure in Fort Bend ISD, Rodriguez oversaw increased opportunities for students including traditionally underrepresented student groups, which assisted in the removal of low-performing school designations and ensured all schools met the state’s accountability measures. In addition, Rodriguez led the implementation of new programs that benefited adult and student performance, contributing to the district being awarded the 2018 H-E-B Excellence in Education Large-District Award, which included a $100,000 cash award.
Prior to his role as Chief of Schools, Rodriguez served as an Elementary Teacher, Elementary Principal, High School Principal and Administrator for Secondary Education in South Texas. Rodriguez relocated to the Houston area and became an Assistant Superintendent for Schools in Fort Bend ISD where he served students in Pre-K-12th grade. Within a few months, Rodriguez was promoted to Chief of Schools where he oversaw the day-to-day operations of all 81 schools and the following departments: Athletics, Career and Technical Education, Early Childhood, Fine Arts, School Leadership and Student Affairs. The experience Rodriguez has gathered the last 22 years has allowed him to ensure a focus on educating the whole child and supporting teams of educators.
Rodriguez received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Texas in Austin and his master’s degree in educational administration from Texas A&M University in Kingsville. He also earned his doctorate in educational leadership from Texas A&M University in Kingsville. With a desire to serve both children and adults, Rodriguez has invested his life in shaping the future of others, through his role as friend, colleague, mentor, religious education teacher, and now superintendent.
